Description

Provenance: Unknown; probably originates from the Madrid court circle.

Description: Folio format 40×28,5 cm; spine: 1,5 cm; 33 folios of music. Late nineteenth- or twentieth-century binding with dark brown covers and light brown marble paper boards inside. Ten staves per page. The top right of each folio is numbered in pencil. Each page of music is bordered in red. On fols. 19r to 20v, and 33, a green external border has been added to the red one. A page has been cut between fols. 12 and 13. The sonatas are numbered consecutively from Sonata XVI to XXX. This manuscript includes 15 sonatas composed by Scarlatti; no other authors are featured.

Copyist: A professional copyist, possibly José Alaguero as the writing is very similar to Venezia 1742 and 1749 (see Pedrero-Encabo 2012Pedrero-Encabo, Águeda. 2012. ‘Una nuova fonte degli “Essercizi” di Domenico Scarlatti: il manoscritto Orféo Catalá (E-OC)’. Fonti Musicali Italiane 17: 151–73. , 153-155). Alaguero was one of the copyists in the Royal service.

Comments: This is the earliest known copy of Scarlatti sonatas found in Spain. It presents a set of fifteen sonatas, all of which are present in the Essercizi. The compass has not been modified.
