Heiligenkreuz

Description

Provenance: Unknown; the name ‘Fischer’ is written in the right margin of the first recto. Currently in the music archive of the Zisterzienserabtei Stift Heiligenkreuz.

Description: A single folded bifolium (230x340mm) containing a copy of K113.

Title: ‘Sonata dal Signore Scarlatti’. The word ‘Sonata’ is further duplicated twice at the incipit.

Copyist: The music is in a single (Austrian or German?) professional hand throughout. Several annotations are provided in what appears to be a later hand.

Comments: The second verso contains what appears to be an (erased) ascending and descending scale in the left hand. Likewise, it appears that the opening thirds in the right hand (bar 1) were erroneously duplicated in the left hand. Further suggestions for added octaves are given in the fourth system of the first recto. Internal repetitions are marked in a conventional manner (bar 95-101). Our variant analysis suggests kinship with the Breitkopf & Härtel collection, placing this copy within the central European Scarlatti tradition.

Date: If indeed based on the Breitkopf & Härtel edition, the Heiligenkreuz copy is datable to after 1822. Several numbers are present in the left margin of the final verso: it is unclear whether the ‘1912’ there is of particular interest.
