Provenance: Samuel Wesley (1766-1837). Presented to the British Museum by Robert Glenn Wesley in 1896.
Description: A collection of pieces for harpsichord, pieces for organ, hymns, chants, canons, songs and anthems. K95 is present on pages 10-11 (though begins on page 11).
Watermarks: WHATMAN (James Whatman); a large lily. Later leaves appear to have the letters GR below a banner (?) with three diagonal lines (beam?).
Titles: ‘Jigg Scarlloti’
Copyist: Some of the material in this collection is by the young Samuel Wesley; it appears the Scarlatti is in a neater, more mature hand.
Comments: There are several annotations surrounding the piece (by Samuel Wesley?). At the incipit we read ‘Bigin / Here / Here’; at the bottom of page 11 ‘Dont Turn / over’; at the bottom of page 10 ‘Note/ Dont you bigin here but on the next page’. Seven more ‘Here’s are found on page 10, as well as what may be a hand pointing to the start of K95.
The index, dated 1773, contains Samuel Wesley’s signature as well as a drawing of Handel with the following annotation: ‘To the Memory of the Immortal HANDEL who compos’d 500 and 66 pieces of the finest Music in the earth’.
