London Tyson

Description

Provenance: Unknown. Later part of the Tyson collection in the British Library, Tyson MS 4. Presented to the British Library on 26 February 1998 by the family of Alan Tyson.

Description: A manuscript collection of music by Scarlatti, Samuel Wesley [?], and Joseph Kelway, in various hands.

From the British Library catalogue entry: ‘None of the works is attributed in the volume, beyond a title label reading ‘Scarlatti, S: Wesley’. With a list of contents and collation diagram in Tyson’s hand (ff. 33-4). Various watermarks, including no. 115 in E. Heawood, Watermarks (Hilversum, 1950), there dated ?1760-70’.

Watermarks: It appears Tyson’s collation diagram recorded many of the watermarks present in mirrored form. It is likely that most of the paper that was used was manufactured by James Whatman.

Titles: Either ‘Sonata’ with a tempo marking, or only a tempo or character marking.

Copyist: The main Scarlatti section was copied by a single professional copyist. The copy of K123 is in a different hand.

Comments: The copy of K48 is incomplete. K123 follows the Allemande of Joseph Kelway’s Sonata no. 4.

Date: Dated to 1760-1770 by the British Library based on the watermark evidence.
