Milan 3

Description

Provenance: Part of the Fondo Mascarello Bravi.

Description: Oblong manuscript, 14 folios, c220x293mm.

Milan 3 (Ms.TM.42) is a partial manuscript copy of the Roseingrave edition (first volume), based on the inclusion of the Roseingrave introduction followed by the two versions of K8. The pieces appear in the same order as they do in the Roseingrave edition, though some pieces have been omitted. This was an intentional decision as there appear to be no excisions.

Rastrum: Stave size: 9mm; distance between staves: 11mm; total stave span: c188mm.

Watermark: A lily in a circle with what appear to be the letters I and W below, but damage to the watermark wire makes it difficult to establish the exact letters.

Titles: The titles of the pieces are the same as those found in the Roseingrave edition.

Copyist: Single Italian hand, likely that of a professional copyist.

Comments: There are some annotations by what appears to be a later hand. These include the incipit indication ‘… [Espurium?] p[er] Organo’ and the name ‘Contumaci’ (Cotumacci?) in the corner of fol. 1r.

The numbering of the pieces is consistent until K35, which is numbered 14 (instead of the expected 12). K10 is numbered 18 (instead of the expected 13). It is unclear why this is the case; perhaps Milan 3 was copied from a copy of Roseingrave which contained this numbering.

Date: The earliest we could date this copy to is c1740. There is not enough information to provide a more reliable dating.
