Description

Provenance: Monastery of Montserrat.

Description: Folio format 21.7×30.5cm. 75 pages, sewn binding, parchment covers with straps on the binding. Book spine: 1,5cm. 8 staves per page. Modern numbered pagination in the top right corner, starting at 1 (cover) and ending at 73; another hand has written a different pagination, starting at 569 (cover) and ending at 640. The original collection consisted of a set of 24 sonatas, each numbered, plus 2 further unnumbered and added at the end of the manuscript by a different hand. Some pages have been cut, resulting in the loss of sonatas 15, 16, and 17. There are some pencil annotations correlating certain sonatas with different manuscripts in the Montserrat archives.

The manuscript is a miscellanea of keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti (6 sonatas), Antonio Soler, Antoni Mestres (†1786), Juan Moreno y Polo (1711-1776) and Francesc Mariner (1720-1789) among other local composers.

Rastrum: Stave span: 0.9cm; distance between staves: 1.1cm; total stave span: 17.5 cm; length of stave: 28.5cm.

Title: The title appears within an ornamented frame: ‘LIBRO DE SONATAS DE ORGANO DE JUAN QUÈR Y VILLARÒ’, with the addition: ‘Haora (sic) de R[everen]do Diego Mirosa, P[árro]co [de] Cardona”. This last inscription has been crossed out and substituted by the following: ‘Fr[ay] Francisco Molí. Org[anis]ta 1767’. A set of verses by Diego Mirosa (active 1790) appears in M2786.

Copyist: A single copyist until page 71.

Comments: The Scarlatti sonatas appear in consecutive order (Sonata 8ª is missing due to page cuts). Sonatas K533 and K302 are here attributed to Soler. Sonata K533 is here incomplete (bars 1-61) due to page cuts. This sonata is also present in Montserrat 484, pp. 10-11.

The Scarlatti sonatas have been modified to a keyboard with a c,- eflat’’’ compass.
