Provenance: Pasqual Bonete Yscate (eighteenth century)/José Guimerán (nineteenth century). Private archive of Manuel Milián Mestre (born 1943); at present in the possession of Romà Escalas.
Description: The following comes from Yáñez Navarro 2015Yáñez Navarro, Celestino. 2015. ‘Nuevas aportaciones para el estudio de las sonatas de Domenico Scarlatti: los manuscritos del Archivo de Música de las catedrales de Zaragoza’. PhD dissertation, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. (original text in Spanish only):
‘Two notebooks bearing the titles “Cuaderno de Sonatas compues / tas por el Señor Dominico Scarlati / De Pasqual Bonete Yscate” [Notebook of Sonatas composed by Mr Domenico Scarlatti / By Pasqual Bonete Yscate] and “Cuaderno de Sonatas para la expedición de José Guimerán” [Notebook of Sonatas for the use of José Guimerán]. These volumes are noted by Romà Escalas in the preface to his edition of various keyboard pieces attributed to José de Nebra.’
According to Yáñez Navarro, it has been difficult to establish the exact contents of these notebooks. There appear to be thirteen sonatas by Scarlatti in this collection, but other than K5, the rest is unknown.
Copyist: The individual notebooks originally belonged to two organists, Pasqual Bonet [or Bonete] Yscate and José Guimerá [or Guimerán] Sabater, who were in all likelihood also the copyists of their respective manuscripts. Bonet’s notebook was copied on eighteenth-century paper, while Guimerá’s notebook was copied on more modern nineteenth-century paper.
Comments: This collection was not available during the ‘Texting Scarlatti’ project.
Date: Mid-eighteenth century (Bonet) and mid-nineteenth century (Guimerá).
