New Haven 153

Description

Provenance: Monnier “le Cadet”, dedicated to a Mlle. Ballan (c1768). Now in the John Herrick Jackson Fund (Music Library of Yale University). A librarian’s note states that this manuscript volume was purchased from Otto Haas in London on 16 April 1965.

Description: A treatise on harpsichord playing with twelve illustrative examples by various composers. The entire volume was copied by a ‘Monnier le Cadet, Maître De Musique … 20 Janvier 1768’ (page 129). The volume contains, among other works, two sonatas by Scarlatti: K95 and K36. K36 was almost certainly copied from a printed edition based on an annotation by the copyist: ‘extrait de Mon Livre de Sonate Des Scarlatti’.

Titles: Both sonatas are referred to as ‘pièce Itallienne’. K95 (which is not explicitly attributed to Scarlatti) additionally has the indication ‘a main[s] croisée[s]’.

Copyist: Monnier le Cadet.

Comments: K95 is wrongly marked as ’16/8′ rather than ’12/8′. Based on our variant analysis, the ‘Livre’ referred to in K36 is almost certainly Boivin 4.

Date: The volume is explicitly dated to 1768 by the copyist himself.
