Paris 66

Description

Provenance: Unknown.

Description: Gustafson Fuller 1990Gustafson, Bruce, and David Fuller. 1990. A Catalogue of French Harpsichord Music 1699–1780. Clarendon Press. describes Paris 66 as a French harpsichord notebook. They identify one of the hands as that of ‘Coulaud’.

Title: No title is given for K95.

Copyist: A single (professional?) hand.

Comments: The large number of variants suggest that the exemplar used for the copy of K95 is no longer extant.

The other pieces in this collection are:

  • The first piece is similar to an anonymous keyboard piece in a Boston collection. There is also a transposed version in a Brussels manuscript; here it is called French Air.
  • The second piece also appears in F-Pn D-18417 for two cellos. The RISM entry for that collection refers to this piece as ‘Thème et 3 variations sur une romance extraite de “L’aveugle de Palmyre” (acte 1, scène 3), comédie pastorale en 2 actes de Jean-Joseph Rodolphe’. This piece was first performed in 1767 and published in 1768.
  • The third piece is a minuet. As is also the case for the mineur/majeur piece which follows K95, its author appears to be unknown, and no concordances can be found on RISM.
  • The final piece appears to be a piece by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini (1741-1816), specifically ‘Un guerrier par [or sous] un coup funeste‘ (see also here).

Date: Gustafson and Fuller date this collection to c1766; the inclusion of the second piece suggests a slightly later date.
