Provenance: Former owners: Frances Sneyd; [Francis?] Newdigate (Blackheath, Dartmouth Row); Frank V. de Bellis (d1968). Donated to the California State University system in 1963 (J. Paul Leonard Library, San Francisco State University).
Description: A manuscript collection of seventy-three pieces, of which one is Scarlatti’s K100.
Title: ‘Lesson by Scarlatti’.
Copyist: Possibly Frances Sneyd herself.
Comments: Based on the title ‘Lesson’, as well as our variant analysis, the Johnson 1 edition (or a copy thereof) was likely the exemplar.
Date: Dated to the second half of the eighteenth century on RISM. The presence of an aria sung by ‘Sig.r Tenducci’ (the castrato Giusto Fernando Tenducci) right after the Scarlatti suggests a slightly narrower range of 1758-1771 when Tenducci was in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin. This range is further supported by a few other pieces in the collection by Michael Arne (Almena, 1764) and Thomas Arne (Artaxerxes, 1762).
