Vienna Q15118

Description

Provenance: Originally part of the collection of Adeodatus Josephus Philippus du Beine de Malchamps (1717-1803), also known as Baron du Beine (or Baron von DuBeine). Du Beine’s library was auctioned by his son in 1813, and was at least partly acquired by Archduke Rudolph of Austria (1788-1831).

Description: An oblong manuscript copy (228x313mm) containing eight sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.

Rastrum: Stave size: 11mm; stave distance: 9mm; total stave span: 177mm.

Watermark: Tre lune motif (selenometry 87/18) with the letters ‘REAL’. Choi additionally notes the presence of a coat of arms with stars, the letters ‘CF’ or ‘GF’ (?) and a tre lune motif of a different size. Similar to watermarks 29 (1772-5) or 33 (1774) in Tyson’s catalogue (though these watermarks do not have a tre lune motif; the closest match in selenometry measurements is Tyson watermark 86 (1786/7) which is at least ten years later).

Titles: The title page reads ‘Sonate / per il / Clavi=Cembalo / Del Sig:re Dominico Scarlati’.

Copyist: Two professional Viennese copyists; the first copyist copied only the first page of K216, while the second copyist copied out the rest of the manuscript. Copyist 2 is the same person as the copyist of Vienna Q15116.

Comments: The first eight sonatas of Berlin 19681-3 are the same as those in Q15118. The exact relationship between these two sources is the subject of ongoing research.

Date: The watermark evidence points to either the 1770s or 1780s.
