Vienna Q15119

Description

Provenance: Possibly originally part of the collection of Adeodatus Josephus Philippus du Beine de Malchamps (1717-1803), also known as Baron du Beine (or Baron von DuBeine). Du Beine’s library was auctioned by his son in 1813, and was at least partly acquired by Archduke Rudolph of Austria (1788-1831).

Description: An oblong manuscript copy (224x308mm) containing ten sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.

Rastrum: Stave size: 10mm; stave distance: 11mm; total stave span: 177mm.

Watermark: Tre lune motif (selenometry 82/24) with the letters ‘REAL’. Choi 1974Choi, Seunghyun. 1974. ‘Newly Found Eighteenth-Century Manuscripts  of Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonatas and Their Relationship to Other Eighteenth- and Early Nineteenth-Century Sources’. PhD dissertation, University of Wisconsin.  additionally described a coat of arms with a ‘W’ (or ‘VV’) inside (see also Vienna Q15114). Similar to watermark 66 in Tyson’s catalogue (1783).

Titles: The title page reads ‘Sonates / per il / Clavi=Cembalo / Del Sig:re Dominico Scarlatti’. The ‘s’ in Sonates was added later.

As in Vienna Q15113, a later hand has added the number ’10’ in red ink.

Copyist: A single professional Viennese copyist.

Comments: The sonatas in Q15119 appear in almost the same order in Berlin 19681-3. The exact relationship between these sources is the subject of ongoing research.
