Vienna Q15126

Description

Provenance: Former owner: Gustav Nottebohm (first suggested in Biddau 2025Biddau, Giulio. 2025. ‘Inside Vienna G’, Sounding Board, no. 23 (October), pp. 35–46 <https://www.harpsichord.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/SB23R.pdf> ); Johannes Brahms; bequeathed to the Archiv der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien in 1893 (or posthumously?).

Description: An oblong manuscript copy (215x310mm) containing ten sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.

Watermark: Choi 1974Choi, Seunghyun. 1974. ‘Newly Found Eighteenth-Century Manuscripts  of Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonatas and Their Relationship to Other Eighteenth- and Early Nineteenth-Century Sources’. PhD dissertation, University of Wisconsin.  notes the presence of tre lune motifs (selenometry unknown); the letters ‘AR’; a letter ‘V’ (or ‘A’). A similar watermark is Eineder No. 558 (Bensen, Bohemia, 1776).

Opera prima continante / XXX Sonate’.

Copyist: A single Viennese copyist, who according to Choi is possibly responsible for some of the sonatas in Vienna G.

Comments: Nine of the sonatas in Q15126 appear in the same order in Vienna Q11432. The kinship with this source is most clearly confirmed by the string of absent bars in both of these collections in K13.

Date: Due to a lack of evidence, we tentatively suggest the 1780s as a possible dating.
