Provenance: Archivo de Música de las Catedrales de Zaragoza (E-Zac), B-2 Ms. 2 (named ‘fuente 4’ in Yáñez Navarro 2015Yáñez Navarro, Celestino. 2015. ‘Nuevas aportaciones para el estudio de las sonatas de Domenico Scarlatti: los manuscritos del Archivo de Música de las catedrales de Zaragoza’. PhD dissertation, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. , which is the source for this description). Known also as ‘Libro II de Zaragoza’. Arrived at the archive as part of the music papers of Joaquín Nebra, bequeathed to the cathedral chapter in 1782. Origin is the Royal Music Chapel in Madrid.
Description: A bound keyboard manuscript in oblong format, 213x295mm (paper); binding 225x300mm. Identical in style to Zaragoza 32, bound in cardboard covered with parchment with leather tie closures. 131 ruled folios arranged in 34 fascicles, plus a final unruled courtesy folio. Contains sixty-three sonatas by Scarlatti, with a table of contents at the end (fols. 130r-131v). Each sonata occupies exactly four pages, beginning on a verso (standard disposition)
Watermarks: ‘SP’ (same large and small variants as in Zaragoza 32, from the same paper mill) in the main fascicles. A different mark (a cup or chalice form, associated by Briquet with Italian paper documented from the late fifteenth century, with later examples from Cuenca) appears in the first bifolio. The small ‘SP’ variant in four opening bifolia matches paper in Nebra autographs of 1744.
Titles: Individual sonatas are numbered in Arabic numerals.
Copyists: One principal professional copyist (‘Copiante A’). According to Yáñez Navarro this is the same hand as in Zaragoza 32 and possibly the Venice/Parma collections.
Comments: The second of the two monographic Scarlatti volumes in Zaragoza produced by ‘Copiante A’. Together with Zaragoza 32, it represents the Zaragoza branch of the same serialised collection as Venice and Parma.
This collection was not available during the ‘Texting Scarlatti’ project.
